I guess the worst hasn't passed. Just sitting on my porch watching the parking lot when a squall came through. Heavy, almost horizontal blast of rain with wind. Somebody's blue roof peeled up. there are a bunch of unhappy people trying to keep their broken houses dry right now and not doing a very good job of it.
To homeowners- this is wind damage. If you're insurance companies are trying to get out of paying you by classifying the damage as flood-related, I would like to state that the wind and rain are very heavy right now. Localized wind gusts are nearing 35-40 mph and several inches have come down. Homeowners, throw some tarps over your valuables and go have a pina colada. Pray that the wind finishes the job.

Be safe guys. You made it through Katrina, but I'm thinking Rita is a bigger bitch.

I feel sorry for the people in the Triangle (Beaumont, Port Arthur & Orange). It sounds like they are getting the brunt of the storm.

OTOH, I'm setting over here in Houston, just waiting for my power to go off and my Internet to die, while watching very limited wind. As the night wears on, I'm sure that it will pick up.

I'm boarded up, have water in all the bathtubs, have a full tank of gas in the generator, with plenty of extra gas and we are having Margaritas (in honor of Rita) and baked brie. We'll see what the mornin' brings.

You guys are doing a great job! Thanks, on behalf of your neighbors, for describing the wind damage to the structures around you. You truly are "good neighbors", unlike those goons at State Farm and the other insurance companies who make every attempt to avoid paying out legitimate claims. Be safe!

My wife and I have been reading your blog for weeks now and truly appreciate all of your work. Thanks for keeping us informed. Please be safe and consider keeping the beard. It's cool! Like one of those G.I. Joe action figures from the 60s.

Hi, I'm from Mumbai, India.

I liked your blog and the pictures.

We've been following Rita closely from here on CNN.

I believe she's now waned some and hasn't caused as much damage as was anticipated.

Thank God for that.

Hope you get through the subsequent storm surge and possible flooding safely.

My prayers are with you.

Hey there,
Be safe. I really like your blog. Have you put Adsense on there yet? You must if you haven't! It's too cool. We live here in the Woodlands and were very lucky that Rita didn't do much damage. Just made a big mess. Some trees were uprooted, but it was around the mall area.
